Crowdfunding - a definiton

For some years now, crowdfunding of games has become quite popular.

Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, typically via the Internet. The crowdfunding model is fueled by three types of actors: the project initiator who proposes the idea and/or project to be funded; individuals or groups who support the idea; and a moderating organization (the "platform") that brings the parties together to launch the idea.

For a game author that cannot find a publisher for his ideas, crowdfunding is an interesting alternative. There are several platforms that can be used for financing games:

  • Startnext (Germany)
  • Spieleschmiede (Germany)
  • Kickstarter (USA)

All platforms have different preconditions and backgrounds, so it is necessary to analyze them and define the right platform for the game in question. Crowdfunding without risk, however, is not possible. Crowdfunding campaigns are not successful, if the initiator does not find enough supporters. To find enough supporters, one needs a high-standard, professional design and illustration, also a video is best. The risk involved are the costs for this presentation.
